This month, I made a trip to see my best friend from Pennsylvania. We’ve known each other nearly all of our lives and have been close friends since the sixth grade! This friendship–these kinds of friendships–are so rare. So, it’s important to make time and space for continued connection.
We each hopped in our cars, she heading south, me heading north. And we met in the middle on the Blue Ridge Parkway (“just up the road” from home) at the Peaks of Otter Campground.
I was surprised at how empty the campground was for the beginning of summer. It was quiet and peaceful, and felt like our very own. Here are some of the words that I wrote when I arrived and waited for Dina to arrive as well.
I’m definitely in Virginia. I’ve seen three deer already. Two on the parkway and one here at camp when I arrived. I’ve got my very own ray of sunshine. The sky is blue with passing clouds, framed by the summer green leaves. An occasional car passes by on the parkway below. Save for that, the sound of birds and wind through the trees is my companion.

Once Dina arrived. We walked. We talked. We cooked. We laughed. It was just what we needed.

I am happy for these moments of reconnection with my friend and the things we love: The Earth and all her flowers and views and water and creatures. Till next time. 💚 💙 ~Renée
