Twenty years ago this week, John and I were finishing up our “honeymoon” backpacking adventure in the wilderness of Idaho; and ten years ago this year, I self-published a book about it.
In Search of Simplicity: A Backpacking Adventure Through Idaho’s Wilderness

In many ways, I am the same person, and in many ways I have grown. If I wrote the book today, there are certainly things I would change. And yet, that’s the nature of writing. It captures moments in time and shares them with the world.

Recently, my family was visiting us at our home in Asheville. We all sat around a fire in our little forest, watching the owl in the tree, sharing food and stories. My sister started asking, “Remember that time when you…” and recounted multiple stories from this book; others around the fire chimed in with similar recounting. Yes, of course, I remember those times. I didn’t realize that they did too!
So, in the spirit of sharing and as a way to celebrate 20 years on this journey together, come with us on our search for simplicity.
These words I wrote still ring true: “We set out looking for simplicity. What we found: Life is beautiful and full of surprises but not necessarily simple. Instead, fill yourself with love and acceptance and love and acceptance will surround you.”
